Thinking of moving to NC in the near future. Looking for a town that has houses alongside rivers like this one. I took this picture today (attached)in Riga, Latvia, where I'm currently stationed..

We have towns along rivers, but we do not have enough stone in the coast to construct stone houses. Coastal homes are mostly wood-framed or brick.

You might look into Wilmington, New Bern, Newport or Havelock if you want to live near the coast. Water-front property always commands a premium price.

If you specific questions about towns, people can usually answer them. EG, are you looking for a B&B property?

From first hand experience, living along a river, especially that close, is not worth the heartache of losing everything to a flood, not to mention the annual cost of flood insurance. But hey, to each his/her own.

You could probably find a close match for that house along a creek or river in the mountains, but not at the coast. Lots of stone houses in the mountains.

We do have occasional hurricanes and flooding in NC, especially along the coast, but you can also have flooding in the mountains.

Looking for a retirement house. I do like Wilmington and New Bern. If the place is all brick that could work too.

Both cities have numerous brick houses, but be aware of the cost of flood insurance which could be $800/year in the higher risk zone. Near the coast, homeowners insurance also has separate coverage for hurricanes. We pay $2600/year for homeowner's insurance, and it has risen 10% per year for the past three yeras. As a benchmark, we pay $1900 for property taxes in Onslow County and the house is worth about $325,000. Be sure your retirement budget covers costs like that.
