Relatives of mine here in North Carolina have some "desirable", unopened and unexpired prescription medications that are no longer needed - desirable, as in high need and non-generic but not opioids.

I have advised them NOT to consider advertising these items on Craigslist or the like, as I suspect there could be severe legal consequences.

Are there legitimate organizations (charities with the appropriate medical licensing / approvals) that will receive these items?

No I don't think so, but they could ask their pharmacist and they will tell them what they can legally do with them.

The police station in my town collects unused expired meds to destroy them.

When my husband passed away I also had similar left overs. Hospice advised me to call the director of the local free clinic. I looked it up and gave them a call. They were grateful to receive the items.

Thanks for the responses - they ended up donating the medications (insulin pens) to their local veterinary hospital.
