Hi there: I have been contemplating moving to Greensboro NC and recently read some disturbing info re:
HOG farming and the pollution levels. Can anyone bring me up to date on whether this poses a serious threat to the area or areas?
I've definitely smelled Smithfield driving by on the way to the beach. But I agree with everyone hog farms are not a concern in Greensboro. Our weather mostly comes from the west/southwest so any hog stink is blowing toward the east.
North Carolina has more hog farms than any state in the country. Smithfield, the largest and most horrific of them, is now owned by the Chinese, who are absolutely brutal towards these animals. Any human being with even the slightest decency would absolutely not only refuse to purchase the "products" from these truly evil places, but should also be petitioning the state of NC to close them down. Honestly, people, anyone with even a shred of compassion should be outraged by the misery and horror and pain that these animals are forced to endure--a violent misery that not one among us could survive without going insane.

We have the most Farms because down east legislators have deregulated the operations to the point of extreme profitability. Hog farmers make lots of money, and the citizens subsidize their profits by assimilating their pollutants. Each breath of hog air you sniff scrubs some of those aerosol fecal matter particles out of the air!
I won't even get in to the storm water pollution that escapes from a large facility like that...
