Could have been worse.
It's funny that the kid thought nothing of it, but the mom is certainly a drama queen. I wonder if she would have been as offended if the hat were blue.
So if a Jewish kid came home wearing a cap with a swastika on it, I suppose that would be "no big deal" either. I know, I know - according to you all it's "not the same at all" and folks just need to "get over" history.

There were no markings on the cap at all. Only looking on the inside of the cap was a label that said it was Confederate. Other than that it was just a gray cap....I'm pretty sure the mother had no idea what it was until she looked for some name tag in it.

So what it being a confederate soldier hat, the boy was honor to won the gift. The mom is the one teaching hate. Blacks help fight the war on both sides.
Large number of African-Americans who served in the confederacy. Some were musicians or body servants, but some also fought.

Kudos to you for laying your own nonsense on an innocent child who was probably pleased as pie to be able to come home and show her what he won and how happy he was.
