Hi all, I've been away from this site for a while trying to get my wife to agree with a State to move to. I think (PLEASE) we have settled on NC. Someone recently talked to me about an area that sounds like what I'm looking for but I'd love to hear from you NC folks.
First of all, I am a semi-retired 60 year old who wants to get away from the high taxes, over crowding, crime and Liberalism of NY. I'm just plain sick of it all. I'm pretty much a right wing guy politically but I'm not hard core on that. What I'd like to find is a rural place, 10 to 15 acres where I can bow hunt, possibly gun hunt, be away from it all but within 20 minutes to 1/2 hour from a decent sized town. I don't need a big house; 2 bedrooms or 3 tops. Even just a wooded lot that I can build on would be great. I really don't know what land is going for in NC or taxes etc. I have a lot of research to do. This person mentioned Carthage and Cameron as small towns that might have places like I'm looking for.
Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Jim
This is site for sheriff office in Moore County they will be able to assist you on the hunting perimeter. Main Page
Also if you end up liking property in the north west side of the county, which is rural part of Carthage, you probably a top of one of the shale basins where they plan to do fracking in Moore and Lee County in a couple of years.
Then you will want to contact an attorney to see about having mineral rights and discuss options that may occur. This could be nice supplement to your retirement or head ache.
Anyways Southern Pines and Pinehurst are closest cities or Sanford. all around 15, 20 miles.
You might want to consider Richmond county which is Southwest of Moore Co and more rural. Like SK mentioned fracking in Moore county is likely in the Northwest areas of Moore.
Ellerbe would be a rural town and area to consider.

Montgomery County to the west of Moore County also has some beautiful land, if that 15-20 acres in Moore Co sounds too expensive. There are farms and land realty firms that specialize in larger tracts.
Lots of retirees there, most affluent. It's the Golf capital of the world, as you may know.
NC has a lot of small towns; Cameron and Carthage are not typical of most of Moore county--in other words don't limit yourself to one county if true 'small-town living' is what you want. You can find that in hundreds of towns. Most who relocate to Moore Cty are going there because of the retirement amenities which are generally the opposite of "small town".
Best thing to do before deciding on anywhere is to take a vacation and visit. You might want to come in July or August to see how you like NC's heat and humidity.
Thank you all for your informative comments. We do plan on visiting at least once to get a feel of climate and the areas in general. This is a great starting point!
I would check out land prices around Bostic and Forest City....If you are into hunting this could be the place.
