Gotta be all them blasted transplants. I grew up in NC, lived in NC all but 4 1/2 out of 60+ years, and have never used the term soda.... never heard it growing up... always said drink, soft drink, or coke (generic).... or used the specific name of the specific drink.

^ Yep, that map is bogus because it doesn't include the word "drink" (or "drank" if you're from way out in the sticks).

I grew up in North Carolina, and the great majority (80 to 90 percent) of people I heard said "soda."

absolutely. add cokey cola; dopsey cola, or dope to the list

Seriously it was 'cold drink' and the response was 'do you want tea, water, pepsi, orange crush, rc, whatever'

I grew up in NC, too. My dad's side of the family is from SE NC and my mom's side of the family is from SW Va. We said "drink", too. Never soda or pop. I do say "soda" occasionally now, but never growing up. I heard "coke" used generically more often than "soda" or "pop".

Did people get high drinking coke when it had cocaine in it?

Diet Cherry Coke in a can is very good. I like the word soda. Buying soda at super store gas stations is the best freshness.
