Gotta be all them blasted transplants. I grew up in NC, lived in NC all but 4 1/2 out of 60+ years, and have never used the term soda.... never heard it growing up... always said drink, soft drink, or coke (generic).... or used the specific name of the specific drink.

Seriously it was 'cold drink' and the response was 'do you want tea, water, pepsi, orange crush, rc, whatever'
I grew up in NC, too. My dad's side of the family is from SE NC and my mom's side of the family is from SW Va. We said "drink", too. Never soda or pop. I do say "soda" occasionally now, but never growing up. I heard "coke" used generically more often than "soda" or "pop".
Diet Cherry Coke in a can is very good. I like the word soda. Buying soda at super store gas stations is the best freshness.
