Are they new to you? They are new taxes for me.

I did not even think about them before moving.

Clothing tax is here too. But food tax? Thought that was a "fed" thing, no food tax?

When trying to figure out what is taxed and is not is tricky, while the fed gov't does not tax, the local government can.

Sometimes it depends on the food item.. it also depend on the county or municicapality -

There is a state-levied sales tax of 4.5%.
Sales are also subject to county taxes. Most counties tax 2.5%, for a total of 7% tax, but Mecklenburg County has a 3% county tax. In addition, there is a 29.9¢ tax per gallon of gas (effective January 2006), a 30¢ tax per pack of cigarettes, a 79¢ tax on wine, and a 48¢ tax on beer.

Hope this helps somewhat -

7.75% here in the OC. Basically it would be easier to say what is not taxed. I remember Oregon didn't have sales tax on clothes, not sure about now.

The idea that some states exclude clothing from their sales tax just boggles my mind! Weird.

As for food, it was only in the last, er...5 years that its sales tax was reduced. I can remember when it had the same sales tax rate as any other retail stuff.
