North Carolina’s sales tax holiday returns Friday. State and local sales and use taxes will not be imposed on certain items, from clothing to computers.

The holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Items that will be exempt from sales taxes include:

• Clothing, shoes and school supplies of $100 or less per item.

• Sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item.

• Computers of $3,500 or less per item.

• Computer supplies of $250 or less per item.

Some items will not be exempt from sales taxes.

Clothing accessories, jewelry, cosmetics, protective equipment, wallets, furniture, items used in a trade or business and rentals will be subject to taxes.

Awesome, do they do this every year? We have this advantage in FL and will be moving to NC shortly.

Yes it done every year, and the stores have sales to go with it so you get more than tax off the purchases.

That's the least they can do since the state just made the 2001 temporary sales tax permanent. It was suppose to have expired July 1.

Wow, did NC really not have any sales tax at one time? Was this supposed to go away this month? Any news as to when and if they are to do away with this?

I would think it would help those making large purchases, like cars, appliances, electronics, etc.

Thanks for the info Sunny and mm34b! You two are always very helpful!

The NC General Assembly raised the state's portion of the sales tax in 2001. At the time it was promoted as a temporary sales tax increase. It was scheduled to revert to the pre-2001 level by the end of June 2007, but was canceled last week. Now, the combined state and local sales tax will remain at 6.75% except for Mecklenburg County which is 7.25%.

If you order items online during this time, are they tax free as well?

Are the crowds in the stores as bad as I have heard?
Thanks
Melissa
