If the check engine light is on you should fail inspection.

The confusion could be that certain "readiness" indicators in the OBD2 system may be unset depending on the year of the vehicle and you can still pass inspection. An unset readiness indicator does not light a check engine light.

it doesn;t matter if you have a vehicle that's a 95 or older. Anyways, disconnect and reconnect your battery and the light should go off until whatever triggered to come on happens again. Also, take it to auto zone, they'll check the light for free. Something as simple as a loose gas cap can set off your check engine light.

Nope! That will fail flat.

Items like loose gas cap, will cause it to come on, but it will also go back out within a day or so after it is gas cap is tightened.

The "check engine" light, is an automatic failure (if it is illuminated), here in NY. Either do as another poster has suggested, go to Auto zone or go to your
local parts store and buy a moderately priced OBD scan tool. The particular reason that the check engine light or MIL has come on is surely because of some
problem or malfunction with one of the systems that the OBD monitors.

Anyway, I'm posting a video of my own headache with the check-engine light and I also wish you luck in dealing with your own.

I have a dodge ram 2500 truck. The door on the passenger side is broken and we have tied it closed until we can get it fixed. Inspection is due; will that keep it from passing?
