Hello. I'm posting this thread to all of NC since I'm not familiar with the state & not entirely sure where Red Springs would fall. I am considering enrolling my kids at the Flora Macdonald Academy & I'm hoping someone can give me some insight into the school and the surrounding area. Please tell me anything you know about the school's reputation for academics, athletics, extra-curricular activities, etc. Also, how is Red Springs/Lumberton/Fayetteville area to live? Is the crime rate high (or low) compared to other parts of the state? Are there things for teenagers to do on the weekend? Anything you can give me will be a great help. Thanks!!!

Now, it's been 8 years since my daughter went to Flora McDonald, but we LOVED it there. I miss it even now! Very small school...like a little family there!!!

I grew up in that area, although I didn't go to the school.
I have visited Red Springs a time or two in the last few years. The sad part about the area is that it has no industry. The economy is severely depressed and well paying jobs are scarce. There are not a whole lot of kid friendly places (movies, sports arenas, putt-putt type places) but that never interfered with my social life. If you have the type of career where you can make a good income independent of the area, then I would consider the move. There are areas where crime is higher due to unemployment, but there are good people down there. Some of my fondest memories are of being a kid, walking to the 7-11, riding bikes, and going to the park in the mill village. I never knew any danger as a kid there in the 70's. As an adult, I see sadness and defeat in the eyes of the residents. But there is a strong feeling of family and pride.

There are other things you should be aware of, too. While I do not remember it as a racially divided place (I have rose-colored memories of a child) there are people there who (rightfully) are proud of their heritage and don't let outsiders in easily. I have been in both the white and indian worlds there. Both are full of good people, some are just more wary of outsiders.
