My friend is a Turk dating an American guy. In Turkey the norm is for a girl to do nothing and a guy to call, sms, etc, in fact, a girl does not ever call a man until after the engagement. OK, fine, if both in the couple are Turks, but this is not the case now. Everyday I get a call, chat, or face to face meeting that goes like this:
Her: "He is not showing enough initiative"
Me: "Well what do you want him to do, propose marriage? He asked you to move to the US and live with him"
Her: "NO, NO, NO! Marriage comes later. But he should be doing more to keep the feelings alive
Me: "Well, when was the last time you called him?"
Her: "2 mos ago for his B-day and he was in a car with coworkers so we could not chat"
Me: You know for an American guy a girl not calling is a sign of disinterest.
Her: But I can't call him!!!
Me: So what do you want him to do?
Her: Show initiative!
Me: (Bloody kill me now....women make no sense, even to me and I am one)
hmm Why don't u just tell her what is on ur mind? Maybe she will listen??? Or u could distance yourself from her.
I tell her exactly what I feel, including the homicide thoughts, obviously delivered in a joking manner. This is just a serious case of cultural clash and I am the interpreter
