Phones should be turned off in church, but polite men do not wear hats in churches or other public buildings. They were both wrong.

I know the hat rule has been relaxed from the way it used to be, but when I see a man take his hat off in a restaurant, I know how he was raised.

Removing the helmet was a sign of intentional vulnerability...indicating trust that the host wouldn't attack or kill their guest.

Ladies traditionally got a free pass in terms of hats because removing one often involved pins and doing so would mess up an elaborate coiffure.
Actually, my point was kind of "why do we still have that rule? Whom does it hurt?" I mean, if it was bad to wear hats indoors, then women shouldn't do it either, right?

My thought's exactly, outdated "rule" but the custom is exactly the opposite for women, back in the day and probably still in some some social circles a "lady" doesn't go anywhere without a hat.

And I was raised Catholic, the men and boys were hat-less, the girls wore a little doily on our heads and the women wore hats, at Mass.

I was thinking similar.

For whatever social custom about hats, I have them all the time, brush hats, because I live in a sun intense arid district. Or like Men with long hair, it may be seen in customs as many down cutting phrases but.....it is a good preventative against skin cancer at the top of the ears.

What on earth does that phrase mean?

Unless your definition of "indoors" is different than mine, hat wearers aren't exposed to that brutal sun or at risk for skin cancer while they're under a roof. Granted, if I'm running brief errands in and out of stores I may not bother to remove a functional hat, but if I planned to attend an indoor event like a meeting, entertainment, or church service I'd consider it disrespectful, even rude not to. Unless the hat is an integral part of an outfit or costume.

The point is, she claimed her view was obstructed by the baseball cap, which it wasn't (again, it hugs the head) but was oblivious or unconcerned that her cell phone held up in the air for about half the performance was doing the exact same thing, as well as invading others' privacy (I realize there's no "legal" right to that, but I believe we have a civil right to it in polite society). That blind spot - no pun intended - is interesting.

I think the hat rule is more prevalent in the south, where people like to consider themselves "genteel" and "well brought up" regardless of how rudely they act themselves in other ways.

It means what it was addressing, that customs, whatever they are, of the past may be in error to current conditions.

"Come to me, all you who are weary, and burdened, and I (Jesus) will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

When they kept on questioning him, he (Jesus) straightened up and said to them, " If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."
John 8:7 (NIV )

Come.....
