That, and make sure the moochers don’t try it again after a while. If they’re really persistent, it might take more than one NO for them to cross the OP off their target list.
You’re lucky that you and your spouse would not put the other in the middle. Some of us have spouses who want to be a “cool kid”, “one of the gang,” and maybe secretly wish they had been born extroverts. It does seem that the people who think more is merrier (at someone else’s home) are very extroverted. However, the OP’s “guests” mostly were just plain old users.
