Come to think of it, this friend has never referred to our son as "little man." Not that i can remember at least. She always calls him by his name or something like "sweetheart " or "little one."

It can be, when referring to a woman as little lady...but with an infant, well...you quite literally ARE talking down to her. lol

I’m USA born and bred and don’t recall ever hearing this term before.

Why is it gaggy?

I call my nephew little man all the time. It's not something I thought about or did deliberately--it just flows off my tongue. Maybe because he's the only boy in a sea of girl siblings and cousins so his gender sticks out to me? I've also referred to infants of both sexes as "little one."

I had a friend whose son was a couple of months older than my son, and she called hers "little man." I can't put my finger on why that seemed so cringeworthy, but it did. I never called my daughters "little lady," either.

"Hey little man!"

"What's up, little man?"

I hear it pretty often with boys up even into elementary school. It doesn't make me cringe.

But everyone's cringe meter is tuned differently.

It's a sort of a thing that some people use to refer to their little male babies....I couldn't care less one way or the other....to each his own I suppose.

Yes this is my reaction to it. I cant put my finger on why. I think if I heard some guy refer to "daddy's little woman" I would be equally sleeved out.
