I’d love to be able to talk to my mom, give her a crappy gift, give her a wonderful gift, take her out to eat.....anything. Gone 44 years. I usually plant my flowers on Mothers Day weekend. She was such a gardener, I “commune” with her then. But this year it’s been so wet, I have to wait a bit til things dry out.
Both my daughter (4,000 miles away) and son (2,000 miles away) called me for Mother's Day. My children sent me a life alert/medical emergency system (they will pay the monthly fee) because of a recent fall. Not a very sentimental present but one that shows that they love me.
My mum and I live in different countries. I don't send her a Mother's Day gift, but I do call her and have a nice long natter about life. My brother lives in the same city as her and makes sure she is properly celebrated with lunch and gifts. The only time I send gifts is at Christmas, but I make sure they are lovely and thoughtful. I don't order things online or use a ship to recipient feature - that feels so impersonal to me. I pick everything out or make it or have it made, then wrap it nicely and include a note of why I chose it. If it makes sense to do so, I like to give favorite items I've discovered that year I think they will enjoy.
My family usually treats me to breakfast in bed and a beautiful dinner and gifts for Mother's Day. My husband is especially generous as he travels a lot for work and I take on the bulk of responsibilities with the kids. This year, he and my oldest son are away on a trip together, but I had a lovely message on my phone from my son first thing this morning and my husband has bought me a beautiful cast iron table and chairs I've been eyeing to complete an outside patio. My oldest daughter has managed the 3 year old all day. I absolutely love being a mother. Mother's Day is one of my favorite days of the year.
Do you like to receive gifts? I’m asking because there are people who get embarrassed about receiving them. If you still like to receive them but not give them, then that’s cheap on your part.
No. The gifts I receive end up unused in my basement collecting dust. I buy myself the things that I want, and I haven’t expected gifts from anyone since I’ve been an adult with a job. If it’s something that I actually want then I probably already have it.

My mom was happy with just a phone call today. I really wished I lived close to her so I could cook her a meal today. She wants for nothing so material crap is just a waste of money and against my beliefs on consumerism.
My mom didn't know what she wanted this year and I'm not one to get gift cards unless it is a secret Santa thing. I ended up getting her a Dumbo shirt at Hot Topic and a coffee mug.
