Since going to college I’ve realized that I am completely, embarrassingly oblivious to satire. Several times I’ve had to just laugh along with others because the satirical joke flew right over my head. And with texting, it's even worse! So many times I find myself responding seriously to texts that are obviously satirical in hindsight. It's actually pretty bad. The thing is, I have a pretty good sense of humor (I’ve been told so at least), but this is one thing I just don't get. I realized the reason I never pick up on satire is because my entire family, immediate and extended, NEVER use satire. Growing up we always cracked jokes but never satirical ones.
Does anyone else never pick up on satire or am I the only one that can’t recognize it when it slaps me in the face?
Just curious ... political satire is so widespread courtesy of SNL, Stephen Colbert and many others. Assuming you watch some of those programs, do you appreciate the way they skewer the politicians and government in general or do their comments fail to get any reaction or laughs from you?
You live in Georgia? There's a great comedian who once said, "In parts of Georgia, sarcasm is still consider witchcraft." - Reginald D Hunter. I think you are not alone.
In order to "get" a lot of satire, you have to be familiarizer with the subject being satirized. If you are well versed in everyday culture, you won't get the joke. If you spend most of your times doing things - that are outside of most media, you are probably better off.
Do you mean sarcasm? I'm trying to picture people using satire in conversation. Did you watch the Colbert Report? Did you understand that it was satire?
