I only rep posts that are particularly well thought out and valuable. Another forum that I frequent has both a rep system and a like button. I like this because I can click like for things I enjoy reading while saving rep points for things that above and beyond. But in that forum a persons rep can be used to gauge how reliable and safe the information a particular poster gives is.

So im new to this. How do u "rep" someone? Rate their post positively? Whats the point of it? I came here to discuss things with people and ask advice. I wasn't aware there was some sort of competition of rep points. I guess i just don't get it

Not so much a competition, just an acknowledgement when you've received the help you sought. Yes, you can either click the "rate this post" link, or use the scales to the top right. That option gives you the choice of leaving a comment and your name.

I rep when a post makes me laugh, makes me think, or is in some way really clever. I don't rep for agreeing with a post usually just because i see it kind of pointless. I agree with a lot of people. But whatevs. No it aint rude lmao. Some other forums take it way too seriously, turns into a "whose rep bar is bigger"

Oh for crying out loud, who worries about rep points? Sometimes I give em out, most of the time I don't. I don't worry who reps me or how many rep points I have. I could care less.

More important things to worry about in this world than rep points.......

"Is it rude when OPs don't give out rep points? "

Not at all.

You say he replies to new members a lot. It can take them awhile to learn about the rep system. See post 13 up thread. I discovered reps when someone sent me my first. Didn't know reps existed before that.

I'm not sure that new posters are aware of the few civilities we have on this forum, like giving rep to those who respond with long or sincere responses and........nope.... can't think of anything else.

On sign up Mods could help by giving rep with a comment on their first post, so the new posters will understand the thrill of being appreciated for giving a bit of snark....I meant info.

Rude? Only if you care. I give a point to people who are intelligent, funny, sad, new, and those who respond to a thread which I start. I send a point to others because I can. It doesn't cost me a cent.
