Based strictly on what you've shared, I would say give him a chance. You can dictate the pace of the relationship and how much you want to let him in. He reached out to you and I'm sure it hurt him to be rejected by you. Parents aren't perfect. You weren't born with a set of detailed instructions, they typically do what they know how to do. Some better than others. If he had bad parents himself it likely influenced him as a parent and husband. Perhaps now he has his priorities in place or his values in check. You'll never know if you shut him out completely.
