As a twenty year old who has never owned a smart phone, I run into this same issue quite a bit. If someone ridicules me, I tell them it's really none of their business how I communicate with people. I am, however, very happy with the money I save and the nice computer I have (which I use much more for communication).
I was never bothered by until recently. I signed up for a Meetup group trip to a Christmas light show at a large outdoor "village" with many shops, restaurants. The organizer decided to change the location of the meeting spot at the last minute (really last minute, like 10 minutes), sending out an e-mail and assuming we all had smart phones and would get the e-mail alert. Needless to say, I ended up sitting outside in the cold for 30 minutes before I gave up and went home. I was phoned an apology the next day (after I posted my experience) but it surprised me that it truly didn't occur to them that not everyone had a smart phone. I have nothing against them, I just have other financial priorities and can't justify adding another $30 a month to my bill.
