It's not near the size that a full size 3/4 or 1 ton trucks.
Big fenders don't make a truck
They just don't compare nor can it pull a load and still get good #'s.
It's a "mid" size.
It should be getting mid 30's for mpg
Nice edit.
Some even get better #'s than I do with a 2wd and a 4wd, some get worse #'s in the real world.
A Rant?
I think Not....
this post is getting close but it still falls just short.

EPA estimates can't be compared to personal best mpg numbers. A combined 28 mpg means 30+ highway, and I've always gotten 2-3 mpg better than EPA, so real world would be 32-35 highway.
The majority of people don't need 15 ton hauling capability. But I see tons of contractor trucks with the ladder racks, tools, and/or boxes in the back. All pretty light stuff. Why waste money feeding the torque monsters?
I'm sure there's also people like me who wouldn't mind having a vehicle that could carry my motorcycle or occasional large object, but would prefer better mileage most of the time. Most end up with a Ranger or gas F-150. The V6 F-150 gets an EPA estimated 18 combined; ranger 24.

Now why would a Datsun need (want) to use a Cummins engine? (must be a 'ploy' to get a USA 'credit' for sales / import duty benefit).
I too would like to see better economy. 220HP and 300ft/# is overkill for a midsize pickup truck and one seeking economy. My 160 HP Cummins hauls around 30,000# GCVW in the mtns. (not too fast mind you...). I like the BIG 4cyl idea as it could be an improvement of my SMALL 4cyl diesel pickup, but mine gets 1 mpg per HP (48HP = 48 MPG in my VW pickup, and I have hauled 2,000# a few times (HD suspension) when I didn't want to take the Cummins, or the Mack class 8.) https://www.city-data.com/forum/membe...0-caddy-rf.jpg

The reason for using a Cummins engine is that it was far easier to source one already built to U.S. diesel emission standards than it was to develop their own.
I like this idea and wish more companies would look at putting diesel engines into the half ton market. It's a perfect fit as it gives you the power you need to use the truck and still return far better mileage than what can be done with a gas engine.
If they pull it off, this could be a big hit for Nissan, which I think is a good thing as it will spawn more folks to follow.
