I am looking into moving to a area near New York city and heard Ulster county is a nice area, can anyone recommened cities in the county with decent apartment in the under $600 range? Also which are very safe.
well, this isn't the cheapest area..but i can assure you even the bad areas aren't very bad. Some areas of Kingston are sketchy. Saugerties is a great area, about 2 hours to the city i guess. I was born and raised here. Very cute and you are surrounded in all directions with art of every kind.. get's boring though.
in all honesty i wouldn't come to saugerties for work though...it's a very small town with hardly any opportunity to make an actual living. For sometihng like wedding videos, i would go to Kingston. You'll have a lot of towns surrounding you like new paltz, saugerties, and rhinebeck, and you'll find a lot more work.
I live the Town of Shawangunk, which encompasses the Hamlet of Wallkill, in Ulster County. We moved here from NYC several years ago, and like any area it has its plus and minuses. Employment, especially now, isn't easy to come by, unless you happen to work in the medical fields or education. I work in publishing/graphic arts, and have to commute to NYC (2+hours) each way for work! There are occasional creative jobs up here, and I think I've seen some postings on craigslist for wedding videographers now and then. If you can work out of your apt. and be willing to travel a bit to weddings, that would be ideal. Most of the towns are small, and you would need to look outside of them for work. I would look in the New Paltz area since there's a state university there, and with that come all sorts of housing possibilities. That said, the Hudson Valley is gorgeous, and draws people up from NYC for weddings in a country setting.
