Confused....did this deadbeat family sneak in a basement window one night or are they some of those famous deadbeat family members so many of us screen our phone calls for.....
If so, point them towards the door if there's so much anomosity....that's why I live by the "sorry, here's some bootstraps, use them......" rule....
The original post was clear - the OP said that some deadbeat family members reported the OP to the town for who knows what. The OP stated clearly that the basement is not rented out, they have no plans to rent it out, and it's used by the OPs children and to do laundry. The OP is worried about nothing. A report about a non-rented space in a house doesn't mean didly squat but the OP obviously is worried about a report to a govt agency. It's not uncommon for people to get all worked up about nothing.
It's like the person who says, I'm being sued for a million dollars. OK, so someone is suing you for something, and they want a million dollars. Doesn't mean they can prove damages in that amount, doesn't mean they can prove anything. So stop worrying about the million dollars!
question ! is your stand up shower, sink ,toilet & laundry on the " plan " ? if not ,when the inspector visit your house you would get a violation which is " work with out a permit " and they would request that you get a permit or restore to prior legal condition. However, you can legalized your basement as a recreation room to include the stand up shower, sink toilet " no kitchen " which eventually would be on your C of O. p.s : any plumbing requires a permit.
