I've just moved to Ithaca, and I like it here, but sometimes I get the urge to escape and go somewhere nearby that's fun. What are some options for short trips to neighboring towns that have day or evening social opportunities and, most importantly, no Cornell students?

Cortland - if by "social opportunities" you mean drinking.
Syracuse.
Rochester.
New York City.
Toronto.

I'll add Buffalo, small places like Canandaigua and Geneva and if you want to go further out, Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Baltimore and DC.

Good point, actually I remember going out partying with folks I met on BITnet Relay (that should date me fairly well) in Bflo, never actually did that in Rochester. Even met Canadians in Buffalo who had never heard of Cornell.
