I'm looking to return to Saranac Lake as a full time, year 'round resident. I know everything about living there. Eternal winters, vicious black fies, high alcohol content, etc. What I also know is that the key to success in Saranac Lake is full time, year 'round, "gainful" employment. Any leads out there?
Congratulations on wishing to return to SL. Nice area......
You do realize, however, that jobs are quite scarce. However, with perseverance and time, you can find one, assuming you are not looking for specialty/industry-specific jobs that can only be found in towns/cities that have the industry you are looking to work in.
SL/Lake Placid/Tupper Lake have the following type of employment:
Numerous Hotels/Motels
3 Regional Hospitals
2 Nursing Homes
Restaurants
Trudeau Institute (Disease Research Center)
Paul Smiths 4 Year College
North Country Community College
US Olympic Training Center
Jarvis Plastics (Old OWD/Lady Diane Plastics)
Group Homes for the Mentally Retarded
Sunmount Institution For Developmentally Disabled
Three major school districts
Natural History Museum of The ADK's
Several Ski Centers
Verizon Sports Complex
Northwoods/Camp Treetops Private Boarding School
Four large federal and state prisons
ADK Park Agency
NYS DEC
St Joseph's Drug/Alcohol Rehab Center
Olympic Center/LP Visitors Bureau
American Management Association World Headquarters
Bionique Labs
VIC @ Paul Smiths
Lumber Cutting
Outside of the above, which only have occasional job openings because of the intense competition from local residents to get these jobs when they become available, there isn't a whole lot of other places to work, except for retail, car delaers, gas stations, etc.
To find these jobs, go to:
oneworksource.com
adirondackhelpwanted.com
Get a hold of the Daily Enterprise, the local newspaper and refer to its job listings pages.
Hope this has been of some help and insight to you. Best of luck!!!
Thanks for all the info Pidgett. I lived in SL for many years and am familiar with most of the employers you mentioned. I have gotten 2 offers for employment so far. However, they are both 6 month seasonal temporary jobs that pay in the $11-$12 an hour range. Neither are realistic options.
Taboo-If you are interested, the $12 an hour job was with Verizon, and the $11 an hour job was with NYS DEC.
