I grew up between Cortland and Ithaca, attended Cornell, then worked and lived in an apartment in Cortland for a couple of years. I walked to work in Cortland. I always felt more comfortable walking around in Cortland than in Ithaca. Since then I've been to many other communities nationwide and also return often to Cortland and Ithaca. Cortland would be considered quite a gem among small cities applying standards of elsewhere. I suppose it must just be overshadowed by Ithaca being 20 miles away.
Oneonta is pretty bleak. Main St. is a narrow 3-4 block strip with Walmart syndrome. Like elsewhere, Walmart is sucking the life out of downtown. Aside from the insular college communities there's surprisingly little in terms of social activities. Outdoor activities are also surprisingly limited unlike the more bohemian flavor of the Catskills to the east or Ithaca.
Most of the cities, large and small, in NYS are walkable like Ithaca is. After all they were established before the advent of cars when people traveled by foot.
I like that A LOT!
Where else is similar? Pennsylvania, I think?
How about Massachussets (seems like only Boston there?) How about Connecticut? Anywhere like that in southern states like the Carolinas?
I like that aspect of NYS cities/towns quite a bit...and certainly hope to explore it more.
What you do not see in those pictures is the amount of college students from the three colleges in tompkins county, nor do you see the big drug problem Ithaca has. I have lived here for 23 years and I cannot wait to move because of some of the people who live there, they are not good people.
The one thing i will always miss about Ithaca is its natural beauties, they truly make this town remarkable.

There are plenty of small towns with pretty downtowns in NYS, but imo none of them come close to Ithaca for culture, farmer's markets, green practices, and hiking/biking - not to mention the hordes of beautiful young sweeties from Cornell.
I would post some good information but the Original Post was resurrected from over 2 years ago and I'm not sure if the Original Poster is still interested in the subject.
