Hi, we've been poking around the N.E area the past year, spent some time in New England and upper N.Y area. Really were blown away by how beautiful the region is. Woods, lakes, rivers, charming towns, and still close to major cities. The mega nature piece is what we love about CO, but for various reasons, we are looking to move. We love the West, but it's in crisis.
Has anyone had any experience living in the Lake Placid area? Specifically for families? We spent some time there this summer exploring the MTB trails and interacting with locals--awesome people, awesome vibe. We are still considering new england area, but taxes are high, specifically in VT.

thanks for any thoughts!
In terms of the bolded, what are you considering to be close? I ask, because the closest major city is Montreal a little over 2 hours or so.
Also, given that you have a relatively wide area you are looking to potentially relocate to, what are you looking for in a new community? I ask this question, because you have have other communities in Upstate NY that fit what you are looking for in a community, but are also closer to cities of substantial or even major cities that fit what you are looking for. I'm thinking of say communities in the Catskills, for instance, as you still get mountains and you can be closer to NYC.
Taxes can be high in terms of rates here, but housing costs are generally some of the lowest in the Northeast in Upstate NY. These sources can give you an idea of what I am referring to: https://www.nahb.org/news-and-econom...ortunity-index (Look at Complete Listing by Affordability Rank)
So, housing overall can still be lower or on par with lower cost of living areas in other regions of the country.
Also, the counties in the North Country/Adirondack portion of the state tend to have lower property tax rates. So, that may be another plus in terms of Lake Placid.
Hi! We are looking for 'backdoor' access to nature, trails, athlete-ish community, good schools, snow activities and a farmers market type of town where we can source local food. We live in the high Rockies now, and don't need to be close to a major city, although an airport within an hour would be helpful. (When I said cities, i was thinking Burlington Vt size big, not NY city)
We currently make it too denver 1-2 times a year. Usually for a direct flight of some kind. Our nearest town is 125k in fort collins, so we are pretty self sufficient in terms of small town living.
I think the school piece could be the most challenging in the Lake Placid area. I know NY has good schools, generally, so finding that sweet spot.

Got it. Schools in Lake Placid, I believe are solid and they actually have a private school option in regards to Northwood: https://www.northwoodschool.org/
new paltz looks great! Any of these off the radar places you can think of, are super helpful. so cool
No problem...Another one that comes to mind that may work, but the "mountains" aren't as tall is Ellicottville south/SE of Buffalo in Cattaraugus County: https://www.ellicottvilleny.com/
our budget is quite high. 700's. but, wanting to be way under that if possible.
It's difficult to guage home cost these days as everywhere is at historical highs. It's just how high is subjective. My sister in Seattle thinks CO is affordable, CO think Midwest is affordable, everything thinks Cali is high, etc...and so on.

That is true...I also think that some of these places have gotten on the radar of some people, to where prices have likely gone up because of their discovery.
Given your budget though, I think you can still find what you are looking for.
