We are a family with two young children. We are wondering the cost of a 2-3 bedroom detached house for rent in Ithaca. Are we looking at more than $1000 for a place that is in reasonably good condition?

Thanks.

Depends very much on where you want to live. As CBaillo mentions, just one or two towns over, that's pretty reasonable. In town, I think that'd be difficult; I was looking at two-bedroom apartments and found most to be in the 850-1000 range (including heat). The one separate house I remember looking at offhand was 1000 not including heat.

Thanks for you reply. What I was also wondering is what costs are involved with renting around Ithaca? For example, here we pay a month in advance of rent and one month security deposit. What do you have to pay when you rent there? Thanks.

just like anywhere, it depends on the landlord. we got our place w/ a first month and security (which was an extra month), but weve seen some places that are asking for first/last AND security.

if you're renting a house, more than likely, the cost of propane/heat will be on your own shoulders, which is no small amount. unless you get very lucky and find a place that the landlord pays heat for. they exist, but usually free heat is for apartments, and not houses. thats going to be your big bill in the winter, and throughout the year, depending on how many appliances are propane dependant. It cost us 500.00 to start up service w/ 2 100 gallon propane tanks outside our home already installed. we just pretty much paid for the gas that was in them already.

CBAILLO,

Where did you find that house rental? We are looking to rent a 3 bedroom around Ithaca / Dryden and just want to know where to look besides Craigslist...

Any suggestions? Advice? anyone?

CallMeADreamer: On Craigslist, I actually had better luck posting in the "housing wanted" section than I did looking through the postings. Especially when you're not looking for student housing, there can be a lot to sift through otherwise.
