I am sure there is a number you can call to make inquiries. I would guess that the bill you paid on line wasn't reported and now they are rebilling you with late fees, just a guess.

Did you prepare the return yourself and did you do it online with the software supplied by the state or with a commercial tax software like Turbotax? In any event, don't pay immediately. Wait until you receive a formal notice by mail of tax due.
