CK, how do you feel the Native American population has been treated in NYS?
Just curious, but why are you just asking me?
Personally, anyone with an iota of knowledge of history know that it hasn’t been good in many cases and not just in NYS. However, the point behind even starting this thread was to first show their existence within in the state, to illustrate that the various aspects of culture are still alive between the multiple nations and that like any other group, there is a diverse and varied group of people.

You have approx 200 posts on this thread. I assumed you had some insight into this issue.
Yes, we had some as patients and driving through the reservations I encountered some. What do you think of the unending battle over selling cigarettes on the reservations? Given what has been done to the Native American population both here and it Canada they deserve some kind of consideration.

Some still sell them and it is usually to non Natives. So, it may be simply a matter of revenue for the nations.
With that said, some go with gaming/casinos or have other businesses. I’ve been to Turning Stone on Oneida Nation(not to gamble), as well as their Sav On gas stations/convenient stores. I’ve also have been to Firekeepers on the Onondaga Nation. There is also an event center/skating rink on the Onondaga Nation that has been open to the public. So, the business ventures are more diverse on Native land than many may realize.
Have you been to any business venues that are related that are Native owned?

Down here in Florida, it was the Seminoles and all the reservations are far south of here, but I will make it a point of visiting them when I head that way. When I was in Phoenix there was a store owned by Alice Cooper, run by his parents, that sold all kind of Indian wares. I still have some. As far as WNY, I don't smoke (and never have) so there was no reason to go to the reservations but I enjoyed meeting the Native Americans at the Erie County Fair.

A better way to aquaint oneself with your local indigenous people than taking up smoking and gambling is to join them for public gatherings (pow-wows) and feast days (when they are open to the public).
Most tribes have a website and publicize these events when they are open to the non-Native populace. They are usually fun, festive, and geared towards entertaining and educating the community.
Here is a website that lists a pow wow schedule for New York (and links to schedules in other states).
