I live in the mid Hudson Valley(Orange County) and every so often I'll hear someone mention that they'd like NYC to break off and be its own state. Generally, the complaint is something along the lines of "I was our taxpayer money to go to us and not to supporting the City". There has been talk to it on rare occasions in the paper as well. Obviously, it's highly unlikely that this will ever happen, but I'm curious, what are your thoughts on it?
Upstate NY is going to be broke with or without NYC. To be honest there are fiscal difficulties around the ENTIRE nation. Municipalties from Detroit to Jefferson County Alabama have been declaring bankruptcy.

Many, many states have their own versions of this argument. In Florida, some in South Florida have long wanted to split off from the rest of the state. Several counties in Colorado wanted to separate from the rest of the state. Don't even get me started on California.
I think they're interesting theories, but ultimately theories that will never translate into anything.

^ This......NY is not alone in terms of parts of the state wanting to separate or even states wanting to leave the country. I believe that the latter was being thrown around in regards to Texas.
