I'll be driving from the Binghamton area to New Haven, CT, on Sunday. Google maps suggested taking Rte 17 and then I-84 from Middletown on. I'm wondering if it would be better to take I-81 south to Scranton, thus avoiding Rte 17.
I'm not looking for a scenic route -- I'm looking for easy driving.
To be honest, 81-84 is a bit longer but an easier drive. Route 17 in upstate NY is a DISASTER. Poor road conditions and potholes galore once you leave Broome County going easr. Its a 55 mph road in Delaware County, too. The next county down, Sullivan, isn't much better either. The road becomes well paved once you enter Orange County, but there is 115 miles between Bing and OC.
Aha. I was afraid of that. Thank you for the information. I am going to reprint my directions and go down to Scranton, since I am definitely looking for a route for maximal cruise control, since it's just going to be me and my young son and a stack of storytellers' CDs from the library. Thanks.

You are very welcome. Cruise control is best suited for 81 to 84 without a doubt. Be careful in PA though, troopers are harsh there. There is a Krispy Kreme in Dickson City (just outside of Scranton) and one in the City of Scranton itself if you would like a treat
