My husband's job is changing and he will be based in Midtown Manhattan (near Penn Station I believe?!). We need to find somewhere to rent within a reasonable commuting distance but also with good public schools, I know I ask a lot
Can anyone suggest areas to look? We will need a 4 bed house, good schools (all levels), budget around $2500-$3000. Commute no longer than an hour. Also within reasonable distance to an airport as sometimes he flies to client sites.
Perhaps something in New Jersey or Staten Island that is nice, but not too far from Newark International Airport. Bergen County has plenty of good school districts and puts you in between Manhattan and Newark International. New Jersey schools - NJ elementary, middle and high school information

He said this because you want a 4 bed house near Midtown for $2,500-$3,000. That simply won't happen. My friend pays $3,100 for a studio in Midtown, and that's considered a bargain.
And public schools aren't the best in NYC anywhere. Search the forums.
To the OP: your budget is unrealistic for what you are asking. You'll have to compromise on one or more of the following:
Apartment size
Commute to work
Schools level
Monthly rent

Actually I didn't say that at all, maybe you need to reread what I wrote I know how much a place in Manhattan costs which is why I asked about somewhere to commute from

Why is it unrealistic?? There appear to be lots of places to rent within my budget within a commutable distance, Summit and New Providence in NJ for example....
