I have been offered my first job out of college in Rockland County and I am considering relocating from the midwest. Are there any suggested areas too look for housing or areas to stay away from? I realize it is a lot more expensive then the midwest. Thanks for the help.

Most people that have average paying jobs downstate commute from Orange and Ulster Counties.

How much is your job going to pay? Are you looking to rent or buy?

I'll throw out Goshen, Warwick and Monroe to start.

Southern NY is one of the most expensive places to live in the US when you count in taxes and real estate prices.

If you are not going to make a minimum of 90K and want to buy a home, I would say don't bother.

If you want to rent, you may get away with 60K if you live a simple lifestyle and have no large debts. If you are really careful with your $$

Carraige House apts in Goshen is a very reasonable complex and is in a nice area. Rent is roughly 1400/month. Easy access to I-87.

Rockland County NY is very expensive. Give you some examples. A regular split level home is about $575,00 and up. Taxes average for these homes are 8,000 a year and up. New City is very expensive and people are very jappy. Lot of competion with keeping up with the jones's. Cars, clothing, houses. etc. Schools are very competive but good. You could say a high cost of living.
My home is 4200sqf and pay 14,000 + a year for taxes. Its was built in early 1912 and has bee remodeled and sits on 1/3 of an acre. One good thing is lost of shopping and your only 30 miles away from NYC Manhattan.
If you want somemore info, dont hesitate to ask.

Rockland is pretty expensive as the others were saying. I live in North Rockland and I think our house can sell for about $500,000. 1 bedroom apartments are about $1200 range. If you decide to work in Rockland, you can commute from Orange County which isn't too bad. My sister lives in Sullivan County which is just north of Orange county.. Her commute is about 45-50 min, but it's a little less expensive there. Pine Bush is nice.. Houses are a little cheaper than Rockland. Not too much though.

If you are single try to find or share an apartment in or near Nyack, Valley cottage, Congers Orangeburg. Stay away from Spring Valley. I live in Orange County which is a bedroom community for Rockland, all of us are married with kids. You can lay in the street at 9pm!

Since you're fresh out of college I'm going to assume you're looking to rent not buy just yet so I would recommend Valley Cottage or Nyack. Like others have said- stay away from Spring Valley (or Havestraw imo)

Dude move to nyack its not as expensive as they are making it out to be. I make 40k live in a place where its all young people and have no problem with my bills. Go on craigslist and look for apartments in nyack. Thats where its happening. Take it from a person who ACTUALLY lives there
