I work in Manhattan and would like any info (Pros & Cons) that anyone can provide on Harriman. I am considering buying a house there.

The know it encompasses the Monroe-Woodbury schools which is a Pro. Are there any cons.

I like the prices in Monroe but due to the Kiryas Joel.......I'd rather not buy there due to the tax burden.

Thanks.

Monroe-Woodbury SD is widely known as one of (if not) the best school districts in the county. Manhattan commute can be done easily with Harriman train station access. Its about an hour from Harriman to Secaucus Junction, and then a short NJT ride into Penn Station. Lots of shopping options around with Woodbury Commons and the big Walmart complex across the way.

Thanks Dreamshot. I've driven through the area and like what I see. However, I'm only concerned about the tax burden of the Kiryas Joel......since Harriman is a village of Monroe.

They certainly are, those people pump out kids every 9 months for as long as they can.. When two Hasidic Jews marry it is common for them to have up to a dozen or more children. They work the system so that they receive Section 8 housing, food stamps, utility bill assistance, WIC, etc. When most of the time they are much well off then the impression that they give and just use these programs and services for the wrong reasons and people who really need it, suffer or go without. All of this is at the expense of others in the county and raises our taxes every year, as they grow and grow. This sect has politicians by the marbles because the vote together in a block for who ever is gonna help their cause the most. Not to mention they are already expanding into Chester, Blooming Grove, & New Windsor area. Their should be GREAT concern about this, especially if you own a home or are looking into relocating to these surrounding areas!
