I'm still considering relocating to Watkins Glen when I retire but I'd like to know how much the property taxes are there....approximately. Can anyone tell me? I've researched this but haven't been able to find anything.

Google "Rochester Democrat & Chronicle Tax Rates" and look for Schuyler County.

Its around $3500 per $100K assessed value in Watkins Glen. In Reading, only a few miles up 14A from WG, its about $1000 less per $100K. Most of Tyrone is also around $1000K less (though the area that falls within the Bradford School District is a little higher). Most of the Reading & Tyrone areas are among the lowest rates in Schuyler County.

The figures posted for Watkins are pretty accurate. We've been researching homes within an hour of Elmira for several months now. The home we finally settled on is in Penn Yan, town of Benton and for assessed value of approx 115k, the annual property taxes are $2,100 after STAR discount.

Some of the houses we looked at in Penn Yan, town of Jerusalem, also had low low taxes. Well...lower than Chemung, Steuben, and I think even Alleghany counties.

$2100 on a $115K home is pretty darn good for NY.
