I hear it has some "checkered" past but that there's a growing artist community there - which I'm all about. Is Hudson very city-like or rural? Is there a downtown? Is it safe? I would love to be part of a community of artists, but in more of a rural-type environment. And it being near (or is a part of) the Catskills intrigues me.

I've only been once to shop for antiques. I thought it had a cute downtown area, very artsy. I liked the area. I would say you can quickly get to more rural areas, but the city it's self has nice shops.

I lived in Hudson for 35 years. Was there 10 years ago, have friends there now. It turned into an antique shopping mecca in the late 80's I think?
But, going back it was cute still--beautiful green surroundings w/ hills/mts./creeks. I think if you can find quality employment, or don't need it, it is an okay place to live. Access to Albany, Mass., Conn., Vt. Train station there--2 hrs. to New York.
