My husband and I are originally from LI, we moved down south 14 yrs ago and are hoping to move to upstate NY next yr to be closer to family and to get back in the loop with "yankees" again! lol
We have family in the triangle/whitney point area but are hoping to find a town with some culture and possibly closer to some chain stores (maybe within 30 - 45 min is ok). We are hippie/musician/artsy types and loved the town of Ithaca but thought it may be too expensive. Not sure if there are other areas with similarities to it. We are planning on starting a business wherever we decide to move to so population is important but jobs are not. We have 2 children so schools are very important as well as a safe area. We are hoping to buy land outside of the chosen town and possibly a small house to put on it with the funds from the sale of our home now. Preferably under $100,000. We are also concerned about taxes being high (or rising quickly) so are hoping for an area outside of a bigger more populated area. Oh and snow is ok as long as there are warm summers! lol
Is there such a place? Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Reason: County is incorrect! lol should be Broome Co NY
Try communities like Dryden, Marathon, Trumansburg, Groton and Homer. All are pretty close to Ithcac and tend to be a bit more affordable. You might like communities like Owego, Candor and Newfield too. Maybe some parts of Lansing too. This should give you an idea of what you are looking for: RealtyUSA | New York Real Estate |=
The previous post gave you some outstanding suggestions of locations where you may be happy. Of those suggestions, I think that the communities surrounding Ithaca may be more suited to what you describe as your lifestyle.
The towns and villages in Tioga County, such as Owego, may be okay but there is not much in Broome County that you may find attractive to your stated values, lifestyle and needs.
Good luck...I really think you'd like that Ithaca area but it may take some serious research, and visits to the area, to find exactly what you are looking for.
