Hi,
I love visiting ethnic grocery stores, I would like to go to some west indian and African stores, but Im not sure how safe the neighborhoods they're in are, I've been told that they're bad but I want to know if they're really dangerous or not, the areas in question are 1033 Rutland Road, 1190 Rodgers Avenue, 577 New Lots Avenue, and 774 Lenox Road, any help will be much appreciated.

Sheesh, all those areas are pretty bad with Rutland Road and New Lots being the worst. That being said, I doubt think anything will happen to you if you're just visiting once during the day. It's at night that you have to worry about out or even directly afterschool.

There's alot safer places to get West Indian/African goods, and in great abundance in Brooklyn and Queens. They're all up and down Flatbush ave from the Grand Army Plaza down. The area isn't the best in the city but its alot safer than New Lots Ave, but even in the areas mentioned, if you're going during the day you don't really have to stress the crime factor so much, just be vigilant like you would anywhere else in the city. Ramela Distributors in the Brooklyn Terminale Market in Canarsie specializes in African and Caribbean goods as well.

all of these areas you can visit during the day with no problem. just dont walk around with any jewelry out and you'll be fine. even at night time, 2 of these places are still ok to go to (rogers ave and lenox rd). i wouldnt go to rutland or new lots in the evening or night. bets time to go to these places is around 10 or 11 am, and you wont encounter any trouble.

This is good advice. Though you'd probably be fine going to the areas you listed during the day, Flatbush Avenue past Grand Army Plaza has several West Indian and African-oriented stores and runs through a working-class/middle-class area that I wouldn't characterize as unsafe. I've walked around there during the day and have felt fine.
