My boyfriend and I just found a great apartment in Chelsea and are just about to sign the lease based on our feelings about the area and the apartment itself, but I just thought it wouldn't hurt to hear the opinions of the people "in the know" here on the forum. We are both in our early 20's and have been staying in the West Village, which we love, but the apartments in our price range here are just teeny tiny. The apartment in Chelsea is on W. 21st between 8th and 9th, and feels pretty safe even for a girl like me walking home late at night. Also, it seems like there is no lack of things to do in the area, but safety is the main concern. Any insight on pros and cons of the area would be great! Thank you!

I live a block away from that area. I have to say I absolutly love it and its really near alot of night light which is perfect. I walk down that block all the time and its very very pretty. I am a 23 year old girl and I feel safe walking the block at night. Lots of gay men in the area which to me adds to the charm.

I would think totally safe. It is slightly seedy as you get more and more West down there? Just my opinion, but overall good/ fun neighborhood. Not the West Village (as you note), but not too shabby in it's own right! And as Ohiogirl22 mentions, it is a very gay neighborhood which I assume is not a problem for you.

thank you both! and you're right, the gay contingent I think of as more of a plus - clean neighborhood and good-looking men in tight tshirts!

Yes!!!! As I said I live almost on the exact block as your apartment. And I absolutly love it! Its far enough away from club row to be safe(er) and really near the west village and lots of good resturants. the only downside I have even found was there isnt alot of shopping for women on 8th ave, but thats ok i just walk over to 5th ave or take the train down to soho. I am sure you will love living there.

Chelsea has come a long way. Even for the snarky comment about going more west it's still safer than a lot of other neighborhoods. I grew up here "more west" and still live here and it's very nice and a great neighborhood.
