Yeah, there are a bunch of colleges, Queens, St. John's, York just to name a few. Since it's easy to get to the 7 from Whitestone, all of the colleges in Manhattan are very accessible. For instance, it's very easy to get to NYU, Baruch, Hunter.

The 7 is a train. If you see anyone in NY refer to "the <single letter or number>", they're most likely referring to a subway route.

You can find a listing of the subway lines at the MTA's website The color indicates the line (physical piece of track infrastructure) that the route takes in Midtown Manhattan. However, no one refers to the subways by colors in NYC. If more than one route of the same color will get you to your destination, I'll tell you to take the A, C, or E trains, not the blue line, for instance.

Flushing is a big area, the best place would be North Flushing.

Default The Seven Storey Mountain

Thomas Merton's famous book "The Seven Storey Mountain" has significant parts of his story based in Northern Queens during the 1920's and 1930's. It is always interesting to hear about places you know before you knew the world. Here is what he had to say about missing the last LIRR train to Douglaston and having to take the Flushing IRT to Main Street and then what is now known as the Q12 bus. It was interesting that Flushing was kind of considered dumpy in the early 1930's.

How often, after a night of this, I missed all the trains home to Long Island and went and slept on a couch somewhere, at the Fraternity House, or in the apartment of somebody I knew around town. Mod cut: copyright violation.

Yes, I visited Dara Gardens and Georgetown Mews. I was impressed with the area. It has a suburban feel to it.
