Has anyone heard if the economic downturn and huge loss of high level jobs in Manhattan lead to a lot of drop outs in the private schools?

I'm wondering if there are suddenly more openings than usual.

This is doubtful. Most families will make any necessary sacrifice to keep a child in the school. I know that at my old school and at my niece's school there are no vacancies for September.

I have heard from some friend's who teach in city private schools that there were some kids taken out of private schools during the Christmas break period. It was in families whose economic circumstances had suddenly changed drastically because of employment loss or big investment losses( ala Madoff) and where the 2nd half tuition installment had not been paid and was due.
I don't think this was a really a big deal however and nobody is expecting this to be a major factor going forward.
It would make sense that recent events would create at least some unexpected openings but I wouldn't know how to characterize it.

That's kind of what I figured. I just didn't know if it had just gotten so bad there yet that even the usual necessary sacrifices simply weren't enough to fork over the $30k-$40k annual fees.

Anecdotally, I have heard there have been some moderate effects - mostly from people who have left the city after being fired. I know one colleague from work who was kindly pushed out and took his children away, and his seems to infer that he is far from the only one at that school.

I teach in the public schools. Our UFT district rep came to talk to us, and mentioned how a lot of private school teachers are losing their jobs. I guess from low enrollment.

Seems not, or maybe it depends on the school.
