There are outright dangerous streets in New York, but you're unlikely be on one if you're just in town for a few days. They're mainly in the outer boroughs and northern Manhattan. Central and downtown Manhattan is, by big city standards, quite safe. If you use common sense (i.e., don't leave your wallet hanging out, etc.), you should be fine. Have fun.
I don't think you will need to be concerned about being a victim of crime. Where are you visiting from? As said before, stay away from the south bronx and areas of extreme northern manhattan at night. NY is now the safest largest city in the united states.
I would be mainly concenered about crazy drivers so when crossing the north south avenues be VERY careful. Other than that you shouldn't have any problems, just don't expect nyc to be the friendliest place in the world! (particullary in midtown, where you plan to stay)
HAVE FUN YOU WILL LOVE IT!
