Hi! I'm moving to Manhattan and I've seen a couple of shared apartments in luxury buildings for a decent monthly rent. One is on 145th St at Bradhurst Ave in Hamilton Heights and the other one is on 109th St at Manhattan Ave in the Upper West Side/Morningside Heights area. What area is safer and more convenient to live? Both places are close to the subway and rent is the same. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

109th and Manhattan Ave is the better choice in my opinion. You have Central Park, Morningside Park and couple of blocks over you have Riverside Drive and Riverside Park. There are a lot of shops, and supermarkets around the corner and up the hill on Columbus. There are a lot of different types of Restaurants and shops on Columbus, Amsterdam, and Bway.

You will really love this area.

I'll second DAS' nomination! I had a friend who lived at 110th just off Broadway. You will love the area.

Thanks for your opinion guys. How about safety in both areas? I heard that there are some projects in 109th St and some areas can be somewhat sketchy... Thx!

It is pretty safe around W. 109th St and Manhattan Ave as long as you use the necessary precautions that you would use anywhere in the city. There are no projects in the immediate area of W 109th and Manhattan Ave.

Safety on West 145th is pretty good also. However you are closer to some sketchy blocks. You are close to the police precinct in the Subway at 145th & St Nick. In both areas you may need to be more cautious in the spring/summer in the evenings because the parks are nearby. Overall it W. 145 and Bradhurst is busier, and noisier, area most of the time, especially in the spring/ summer/fall. There are projects on 8th/Frederick Douglas Blvd starting at 143th St.

West 109th & Manhattan is quiet most of the time. You are closer to mid and downtown and the bus to Laguardia Airport. You are closer to 2 of the better Manhattan hospitals if there is a need. Mt Sinai, and St Lukes.

If you have time to decide. Walk around both areas on Saturday afternoon after 1 PM. If it is cold there may not be many people out, but there should be enough activity for you feel out the vibe of both areas.

Definitely the Morningside Heights area apartment. Your safest and best bet. Has a lot of shopping and amenities in the area.

I wouldn't be so quick to decide on Morningside just yet. Those doorman buildings on 145th are very very nice (and very new), and have a lot of amenities nearby. I think the OP should visit both thoroughly and then make a choice.

I agree totally with this post. I think the one on W 109th and Manhattan is new as well.

Thank you all for your advise. As NooYowkur81 suggested, I visited both neighborhoods in the morning and at night. I finally decided to go for the Hamilton Heights apartment. Pretty much all the buildings around 145th St and Jackie Robinson Park are very new (1 year old) and there are a bunch of amenities in the area (24 hour Pathmark grocery store, Starbucks, Duane Reade and a bunch of delis). Plus those luxury buildings even have their own gym. Also, there are several trains right there -two of them are express trains. When I walked at night around the area, I felt it was a pretty safe place and there was a good mix of people (nothing like gettho). I am sure there are cooler bars and restaurants around 109th St but, for the price, this apartment was a better deal. Thanks again for your help and keep up the good work on this forum!
