I may end up in Bay Ridge (down in the 90's by 3rd Avenue) and will need to commute to Brooklyn College. The subway is obviously out of the question. From mta.info, it would be more than a 60 minute bus ride on a good day (to go 5 miles as the crow flies!). If I decided to drive in, the best route seems to be the Belt Pkwy - Bay Pkwy - Ocean Pkwy - Avenue H.

Questions: Does anyone know what the traffic would be like on typical weekday commute on the above Pkwy's? Would this commute be 10 minutes or 30 minutes?

You can take a bus to the Q and it would be one fare, you know.

Take the B8 bus from 95th st. and 4th Avenue. Long ride, but better than the train sometimes.
Or R to Atlantic Avenue and transfer to the 2 train, take it to the last stop to Brooklyn College. the Q train is available at Atlantic Avenue also, it is quite a walk from NewKirk Avenue station but not terrible.
By car would be 20 to 30 minutes.
BTW, I go to Brooklyn College too.

I think you are a little confused of where the Q train is located in relation to Bay Ridge?

Maybe consider getting a bike, also?

College lesson plan #1: get a bus map (they're free). Then follow the colored lines and map out a route! All those posts before someone suggested the B11 bus...a sad commentary indeed.

Incidentally, if you take the R train up to Pacific Street and transfer to the #2, which terminates at Flatbush and Nostrand Avenues, right around the corner from Brooklyn College, it'll take you less time than the bus. The trains are always faster than buses.

Sorry, I should have been more specific about the subway and the bus options. I had already done what Fred314X had suggested, and then used the trip planner at mta.info to determine that the R to the 2 (Option 1) and the R to the B11 bus (Option 2) both take about 1 hour. This is why the question was about how long it would take to drive. I might not want to take the subway or the bus after teaching a Tuesday night class till 10:30 PM. (hence the subway being "out of the question")

Thanks all for your responses. It looks like a mix between subway commute, driving and biking (in the warmer weather) will serve me just fine.
