Take a look at a new thread on the Illinois board which starts: Chicago does not = Illinois or somesuch. One of the things I have found since moving back here is that those people not living in the Chicagoland area claim the rudeness and abrasiveness of the Chicagoan is embarrassing to them. Nuff said?
I am, personally, so glad you started this thread as I have been wondering if NYC is friendlier than Chicago (where they are friendly IF you are associated with them in some way. Meaning, if they don't know you and you are a stranger, you just might be treated more than poorly in Chicago)? Maybe Chicago should start a "Drive Friendly" campaign like Texas has or emphasis treating your fellow man better. It couldn't hurt.
NYC no doubt. I have never been to Chicago but i know people that have and said that there is no night life compared to NY and that its very rich and snobby a city.
It depends on what you are looking for. I've lived in Chicago my whole life, but unlike a few sorts out there, I don't hate New York, in fact, I love it, and visit as often as I can. However, I have chosen not to live there for many reasons (although I would definitely consider it given the right opportunity). There are certain careers that can only be pursued in New York (publishing, etc), but housing is less expensive in Chicago (I can get a one bedroom apartment close to downtown, within walking distance to plenty of nightlife and theater for less than $1000), and if you aren't a huge club or nightlife person then does it really matter if there are 500 clubs versus 250?
Personally, I find the people in New York and Chicago to be friendly and accommodating and I find that both have numerous cultural opportunities, world-class museums, excellent food (both street and gourmet), and two baseball teams , and you can live in both cities without a car (something that is important to me).
...and I will fully admit that yes, some Chicagoans have a chip on their shoulder about new york, because it is the bigger more successful brother, but quite frankly I feel that both are great cities with their unique charm and flare, I enjoy them both and would probably be comfortable living in either one of them.
New York City has everything! from broadway to the empire state building...MY GOD THERE IS NOT ONE THING THEY DONT HAVE!! but i wouldn't LIVE there...its too crazy for me
Chicago is a alpha class city, but like they alway was say:
"New York, New York. City so nice, they named it twice!"
