This drives me crazy. I love that NYC is a very pedestrian-ish city. But the recent trends to pander to bikes or to corporations to take streets out of commission is irritating, creates traffic problems, and hampers buses.
I rode my bike around LIC this evening and passed all 3 sites where there were open streets. Didn't see a single person congregating in any of the locations.

I don't think the majority of these are major bus thoroughfares. I'm actually not sure if any of these are bus thoroughfares.
The one in Jackson Heights was extremely well utilized this evening. In fact, I found it a little too busy for my liking. But there’s clearly a need for a space where people can get outside relatively safely. the Streetfilms people made a short film about it. It was filmed today, May 14.
Keep them on the north shore of SI. We don’t need this nonsense.
That makes sense. I believe the north shore is the densest part of Staten Island, and much of the rest of the island has a lot of greenery through yards and public greenspace as well as waterfront with actual beaches.
A friend of mine who lives in Jackson Heights is concerned that delivery vehicles will have find it problematic to deliver packages due to the nearby street closure.

The Avenue is closed but all the side streets are open to traffic. And the blocks are very short. So if you live in 34th Ave between 82nd and 83rd St, then the truck pulls over on one of those two streets and uses the dolly to walk the half block. It’s more of a pain for the delivery drivers than an inconvenience to the recipient, who still gets the delivery.

Well the delivery guy also has deal with parking their van perhaps illegally in order to do so and if there is a thunderstorm like predicted later on today that isn't the best option to take cardboard boxes up to a block or so in the rain.
