Orchard Beach and City Island are a nice day trip.
It's also great for riding your bike.
Last time I did a walk from Pelham Bay Park, across the draw bridge, through the park area and to City Island. It's also easy to head over to Orchard and just walk the trails around there.
We are delighted to introduce you to one of the most interesting communities in New York City, City Island, a small island with a rich nautical history. Much of its colorful past is preserved in the Nautical Museum, and during most of the year we are open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
Sometimes we drive down for an ice cream and walk around.

I went on a class trip to the City Island Museum in elementary school. It's cool

I regularly drive by the City Island/Orchard Beach exit on the highway and have always wondered about the place.
Any one from or visited City Island? I hear there are good sea food restaurants. How is the area/neighborhood like? It seems like a forgotten part of the Bronx.
No, but I have collected some notes for myself, including a restaurant to try, so if you go, I hope you report back here.
Thank you again for all the additional suggestions. For obvious reasons, my trip to City Island has been delayed, however I am hoping to get out there once the restrictions are lifted.

Do so. I grew up around there(-ish) and although I have been to Orchard Beach dozens of times. I have never been out to City Island. I always wanted to check it out, but my friends were never about it.

It's on an island and out of the way, and safe too, so it doesn't fit the stereotype of "the Bronx is burning" for some people. Sought of feels like a small fishing town.
It definitely doesn't have any housing projects or anything you may think of when people think of "da Bronx". Not poor either. Solidly middle class, though not upper class like Riverdale. Kind of like Country Club, but with a lot more retail and food options. It's a good example of what a lot of the Bronx was like and is today that is out of the way... High ownership rate, low crime, etc.
Other safe, middle class neighborhoods that are nice:
Woodlawn
Morris Park/Indian Village
Parts of Throggs Neck and the subsections like Silver Beach, Edgewater Park, etc.
Pelham Gardens
Parts of Pelham Parkway
Pelham Bay
Riverdale and its subsections like Spuyten Duyvil, Fieldston, etc. is the only truly upper class neighborhood in the Bronx.
