Hi!! I am about to graduate from college in May and I must move towards the city! I know I will not be able to afford to live right in the city, but I need some advice. Can anyone recommend some places outside of Manhattan that are cheap but not too scary? I am planning to move with 2 other roommates. We are looking for somewhere affordable, probably a 3 bedroom apartment, with a short commute into the city. Any advice is much appreciated!!

Jersey, Queens, Brooklyn are all feasible. Again, it all depends on your collective incomes - because Manhattan (a 2 BR apartment, perhaps) might be do-able....Check the ads in the NY Times to get a feeling. They have a good search feature.

Look at Astoria or Woodside in Queens. Astoria is getting more expensive but it is still way more affordable than the city and only a 15 minute train ride to midtown. Look on craigslist.
