Not the safest, but not the worst either. The East Village is a mix of old time residents, rich new residents, and project dwellers.

Safety has greatly improved from the past, but there have been a few armed robberies of late.

I consider that area safe. I would live there. I'm in that area frequently late at night and have never had any problems

In city terms it's safe. If your looking for small town safe then no.

Any suggestions for a safer neighborhood then? Assuming... 2000$ budget, and wouldnt mind a studio. All other factors not important.

The Village, Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Gramercy are relatively "safer".

But Manhattan is still an urban area. Keep in mind that a neighborhood may or may not be safe depending on who happens to be there at that particular time. Also, numerous housing projects scattered across Manhattan and decent public transportation makes every neighborhood accessible to criminals.

Use your judgment and you should be fine.

Where's your office/school? You might think it doesn't matter but it can take suprisingly long to get from one end of Manhattan to the other.
