Airtrain LGA continues to move close to actually happening. The environmental review process has to be completed. Meanwhile it appears the state legislature will pass this bill authorizing the Port Authority to use eminent domain in order to build the Airtrain LGA.

Airtrain JFK happened over substantial community opposition as well. But NYC is a world class city, and the needs of the city's economy frankly outweigh the usual complaining NIMBYers. If people like them had their way, NYC would still be wilderness.

A lot of people hate new things period. But change is a part of life whether we like it or not.

There’s a significant number of people who want more and better infrastructure and think this as well as the original airtrain jfk, but much more so this, is a poor idea in terms of its cost efficiency and usability rather than nimby opposition.

A circulator among terminals where there are several far flung terminals can make sense, but most major cities of anywhere near NYC’s population and clout (or “world class city”) construct actual single seat lines to the largest terminal or two from the city center that then also connects with a circulator. These airtrains and their transfers are a joke in comparison.

The laguardia airtrain is doubly stupid because for most people in the city it means doubling back a significant amount when it comes to connecting transit. It might be a little bit more sensible if there was a 7 train extension or a Port Washington Branch extension to feed into this on the horizon, but even then, this is quite a poor use of transit dollars.

The eminent domain legislation has passed.

So now the state is moving forward with the environmental study, and once it is over the Port Authority will acquire the public land along the route. Construction will start in 2020.
